Each time you take a photo you will have to go back to the "DCIM" foldr in order for the computer to update the new photo you just took. A couple more clicks and you will be at the screeen which shows you what's on the device. Then open "my computer" and click until you see the D90 as an extrernal storage device. Plug the camera into the usb port on the laptop. All you want is to see photos on your laptop with no special software. The answers you are getting are much more complex than what you are looking for. OK, I just hooked my D90 up to my laptop. Nikon Camera control pro (not free, most expensive) will let you capture images tethered. What I suppose I'm really asking is there a free way of doing this? With the latest version you have to use View NX to se the photo. The newest version of Nikon Camera Control has done away with the ability to see the photo after taking it, but the older versions can do it. Camera Control gives you more control for tethered shooting than Lightroom. using Camera Control from Nikon or Lightroom. Yes sorry that is what I meant I wanted to do, to view the picture straight after taking it. I maybe wrong but I think you need Lightroom or other software to do it. I have not done this but watched a couple of Scott Kelby's videos where he uses this. Using a USB cord or there are some wireless ways. It is only after you have taken a shot then it is transfered to the laptop. You can tether your camera and laptop, but I do not think you can do live view. There is a bit of a lag between shooting and display but it does show up. But I think I remember simply hooking the camera into the usb port on the laptop.
How can I use the laptop without getting fancy? A real easy way is to use a very portable dvd player to get a larger view screen.
If you really want to get fancy you can use Lightroom which will allow you to do all kinds of whizbang things while shooting teathered. Yes, you can use the laptop in place of your rear viewing screen. Can I connect my d90 to my laptop so I can view the photo as it is taken?
